Turmeric is a root; curcumin is its principal active compound. Turmeric, the rhizome of Curcuma longa, is the golden spice in your kitchen. Curcumin is the golden-yellow polyphenol inside it, responsible for most of the root’s studied biological activity.
Is turmeric the same as curcumin?
No. Turmeric is the whole root, with fiber, oils and many plant compounds. Curcumin is one family of compounds within it, the curcuminoids. When research talks about the effects of “turmeric,” it is usually measuring curcumin.
How much curcumin does turmeric contain?
Very little. Only about 2 to 6 percent of turmeric by weight is curcuminoids. A spoonful of turmeric powder in your cooking is wonderful food, but it delivers a small amount of curcumin, and the body absorbs only a fraction of that.
What should I look for on a label?
Look for a stated amount of curcumin, not just “turmeric.” Then ask how it’s delivered, because getting curcumin to dissolve is the real challenge. Golden Tiger lists 100 mg Bioactive Curcumin per can, made more soluble without black pepper or oil.
The short version
Turmeric is the tradition. Curcumin is the science inside it. Golden Tiger is built to bring the two together: the wisdom of the root, made more soluble and easy to enjoy.
